<idAbs>

The Washington Geological Survey was established in 1890. One of the main directives was to collect drawings, maps, reports, minerals, and other information relating to the mineral industry and make this information accessible to the public. In 2011 the Washington State Geological Survey began a collaborative effort with the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) to electronically preserve and make available thousands of documents, maps, and combine data from multiple sources to improve access and analysis of these data. This featureclass is a result of that effort.

This dataset is a compilation of data from multiple sources designed to improve access and analysis of these data, and provide links to data sources, databases, scanned files and maps. These metal mining collections are routinely used by local, state, and federal agencies, lawyers, small miners, mining companies, researchers, mining/engineering students, realtors, educators, and the general public.

</idAbs>
<idPurp>Mine hazard areas, this layer is represents areas within 200 feet of Mine Hazards and these radii are found on the Snohomish County Official Zoning Maps for permitting purposes.
Per SCC 30.62B.360:
(1) Development activities or actions requiring a project permit occurring on or within 200 feet of a mine hazard area may be allowed with an approved geotechnical report that confirms the site is suitable for the proposed development or action.
(2) For any reclamation activity under the jurisdiction of the county pursuant to SCC 30.63B.360, the applicant must submit as-built drawings in a form specified by the director that reflect the final grades on-site, proper site stabilization and vegetative cover. (Added by Amended Ord. 06-061, Aug. 1, 2007, Eff date Oct. 1, 2007).</idPurp>

<stepDesc>First the flat maps were scanned, followed by the mining files themselves. While the scanning process was underway, data was compiled from a variety of sources. Files were sorted and documents were matched to the correct mines. Data from various databases and spreadsheets were normalized and combined. A diagram for the database was created, a schema built, and points were generated from the latitude and longitude coordinates. The data was then appended to the database schema.</stepDesc>
