These data are included in a file geodatabase that also incorporates water chemistry, temperature, and photographic data for springs found in this feature class.</idAbs>
<idPurp>This feature class was compiled to provide thermal and mineral springs information within Washington State as well as to aid public research in geothermal exploration.</idPurp>

<measDesc>Spring data were extracted from every known publication, thesis, unpublished report, and database. In some cases, groups of springs are assigned to one spring record, due to lack of spatial information for every individual spring. Only when individual springs within a grouping are identified in source publications is that information assigned to an individual spring. This dataset provides locations, name(s), flow rates, and maximum recorded temperatures for thermal and minerals springs as well as fumaroles in Washington State. While there are many more springs present in the state than included in this dataset, a spring or fumarole is required to have at least one temperature value associated with it for it to be included. Springs were not excluded from this dataset on the basis of measured temperature; all ranges of temperatures are included so that users may learn where geothermal resources may or may not be located.</measDesc>

<enttypd>A spring is a type hydrothermal vent of a natural source of water from underground, due to hydrology, confined aquifers, faults, or volcanic activity. A thermal or hot spring has no universal definition, but it is generally accepted that a thermal spring has a water temperature greater than ambient temperatures. A mineral spring typically contains minerals or other dissolved substances due to interaction with adjacent rocks or fluids. Fumaroles are openings adjecent to volcanoes that emit steam and gases from superheated water. Inclusion in this dataset only required a recorded temperature, regardless of temperature value, geologic conditions, or potential designation as a thermal or mineral spring.</enttypd>
