Name: Southern Whidbey Fault 7.4 Magnitude Scenario (USGS)

Display Field: area

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This scenario models a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on the Southern Whidbey Island Fault (SWIF), which is a northwest-trending fault running from Woodinville to near Port Townsend, mostly hidden beneath the Puget Lowland. Geologists consider the SWIF capable of producing M6.5 to M7.4 earthquakes, and paleoseismic evidence from marshes on opposite sides of Whidbey Island suggests the fault last ruptured roughly 2,800 to 3,200 years ago, generating about 1 to 2 meters of uplift on the north side. In the modeled M7.4 event, strong shaking extends across the populated Puget Lowland, including Everett, Seattle, Bellevue, and Tacoma, with Island, King, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom counties among those most affected. HAZUS loss estimates project about 97,800 buildings (~5% of the inventory) at least moderately damaged, with roughly 6% of those damaged beyond repair. More than 100,000 households would lose potable water and power on day one, with tens of thousands still without both after a week. Approximately 14,000 households would be displaced, 58% of them requiring public sheltering. Fatality estimates range from 90 to 432 depending on time of day, with economic losses in the many billions.
